Getting an Online MBA

Hello ladies! Today I wanted to talk to you all about a decision I made about my education. After toying with the idea for the first half of 2014, I finally decided to go for my Masters in the fall of 2014. I received a BA in Communication back in 2012 and had been working full-time for over 2 years. I felt like it was the right time to pursue my Masters. I want to share my thoughts on getting an online MBA in hopes that it may help some of you who might be thinking about getting yours as well!

My Bachelors Degree was in Communication and I work in a Telecommunications Media company so initially I thought I would want to get a Masters in Communication. After doing a bit of research, I realized that receiving an MBA might be a better fit as it would make me a more well rounded employee with knowledge of business and also Marketing, my new found interest. An MBA is a Master of Business Administration. It covers several fields such as business, marketing, finance and management. Several colleagues that I talked to mentioned that an MBA is the perfect option for employees since it can lead you to a variety of career paths, such as executive level management.

After I determined that the MBA was the best fit for me, I had to figure out if I wanted to apply for an online MBA or an on campus MBA. Since I work full-time, an on-campus MBA seemed to be too tedious and with my schedule constantly changing at work, I wasn’t sure that I would be able to make it to every class if it was in person. Another thing I had to consider was if I would be self-motivated to do the online program. It definitely would be different than college and I was hesitant about the online program because I felt like I wouldn’t have a close connection to my professor as I have always had in college and high school courses. I also had never taken an online course so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Ultimately I made the choice to apply for the online MBA program with a concentration in Marketing at Saint Leo University in Florida. The program is ranked high in the United States and the cost is very affordable (around $12,000 per year). The program can be completed in two years and each course is 8 weeks long.

If you are thinking about applying for an online MBA some advice I could give to you is to make sure that you are willing to do the work and put in the effort to succeed. Since the classes are online and you can do them at home, it is much easier to skip a class or discussion since the accountability and responsibility in a class setting has now been removed. If you like to have constant contact with students and your professor, the Online MBA may or may not be the right fit for you. I tend to like to work at my own pace so this program works for me just fine. I have assignments due every Thursday and Sunday. The classes are more intensive since they are only 8 weeks long, so you can expect to have to cover more material in such a short amount of time. There are weeks where I am assigned 4-5 chapters of reading material, along with a discussion assignment and a case study or quiz. I love working at my own pace though and I can do it all in the evening after work or on the weekends. I also love that the courses are only 8 weeks long so that way I am constantly learning fresh new material. Some professors are much more engaging than others and one of my only frustrations about doing everything online is that sometimes the online web portal doesn’t work properly.

Besides that, I am really happy that I finally decided to go for my MBA. I am learning so much about businesses and what makes them tick. I am excited to graduate next October and have more knowledge about Marketing and branding businesses. I also am fortunate that my job will pay for some of my tuition. That is certainly something to consider when thinking about post graduate work – tuition reimbursement plans from your employer.
